More character designs for my goofy pipe dream of an animated Earthbound cartoon.

Ness is optimistic and well-liked, but a bit timid and naive and easily intimidated. Paula’s fearlessness inspires him and goes a long way towards pushing him to grow into the hero he was always meant to be. He’s close to his family and loyal to his friends and has a constant nagging fear of disappointing them.

In the game, Ness is a silent protagonist. He has no lines in the game, unless you count his doppelganger speaking to him in Magicant (a world inside his own mind). In the cartoon series I envision, Ness would be mute and communicate through American Sign Language (ASL). A huge part of forging his friendship with Paula, Jeff, and Poo would be teaching them to use ASL (although he can hear them) so they can read his signing. The signing would all be correct, and not subtitled. The other characters would respond to Ness’s signing so that non-ASL viewers get the gist of what he’s said, but his actual dialogue will add layers of dimension and emotion for viewers who can read ASL.

Lumine Hall, where Ness’s thoughts are displayed on the walls around the party, would be a very powerful milestone for the group. It would be the first time that his companions see his communication happening in realtime, without the “language barrier” of signing. Shortly after, the other members of the group would become more or less fully fluent with ASL and be able to communicate almost as quickly and clearly with him as they did in Lumine Hall.

Ness would have a special phone system with his parents, especially his mother, using certain touch-tones and combinations of tones (little melodies) to mean certain phrases. For example, a certain three-note melody means “I love you” and a different one means “I miss you.”

Music is very important to Ness, even before he finds out about the Eight Melodies and the Soundstone, partially because he does use it a method of communication sometimes.

Ness is the source of positivity and optimism for the Chosen Four over the course of their journey, and though he has much to learn about assertiveness, logic, and self-awareness from his teammates, he has much to teach them about believing in the goodness inherent in all people.

One of my fantasies, as I mentioned several months ago, would be to create a cartoon series based on EarthBound/Mother2. Considering that the game is set in 90’s America—a Norman Rockwell-esque, Lovecraftian-horror-infested America as seen through the filter of a quirky Japanese game studio—I think a Western cartoon would be the perfect medium to tell the story.

I see Paula as a bold, confident, aggressive girl, sort of bratty and certainly brave. The kids at her family’s preschool relate to her because she’s just like them; she follows her id and is unashamed of that. She’d be the main catalyst of the Chosen Four, leading them to dangerous situations just as frequently as she leads them to victory, taking most of the bad steps but most of the good ones too.

She’d be embarrassed that she needed Ness to rescue her from Carpainter and spends the rest of the journey showing him up, to make sure he understands that she’s capable. She makes fun of him for having most of the passive PSI powers (like healing) while her abilities (PSI Fire, Ice, etc) are aggressive, powerful, and showy.

Over the course of the journey she’ll learn from Jeff’s logical/strategic skills and belief in the power of knowledge, Ness’s optimism and belief in the power of mankind, and Poo’s spirituality and belief in the power of oneself.

Sometimes I wish Earthbound’s fandom had the crazed productivity of the MLP fandom; I’d just recruit a bunch of animators and make this happen.

I really admire the work of Dorothy Lathrop, an early-1900’s children’s book illustrator. Though she’s somewhat obscure these days, I came across her work in a book of collected illustrations several years ago. I was looking at the book again last year and noticed something interesting:

I often wonder if this image inspired anyone at DreamWorks, or whether it’s just a coincidence.

my first stab at the pokedesign meme - from last friday. Mr. Mimes, Mightyenas, and Horseas. I was most daunted by Mr Mime but I like how the top one turned out. Sorry about the pencil lines, I guess I couldn’t be arsed to erase them :’D
