5: Not sure where to start on this one so I’ll jump into it!! I’m inspired by artists I look up to (ex: Katie Rice, Mary Blair, Lauren Faust), bands/musicians I love listening to (ex: Max Levine Ensemble/Spoonboy, múm, Kepi Ghoulie), my amazing former schoolmates and friends (ex: Emily Lubanko, Steven Sugar, Emily Walus), my talented friends from all over the world (ex: Ala/ cutebrows , Ryan/ eggpunk , Jonathan/ spectralunicorn), my favorite comics artists (ex: Junji Ito, Junko Mizuno, Vera Brosgol), my former teachers (ex: Kikuo Johnson, Mary Jane Begin), cartoons and animation that I love (ex: Lilo & Stitch, Miyazaki movies, My Life as a Teenage Robot)… that’s not even touching stuff like fine artists, conversations with friends, unexpected real life adventures, the people i work with every day, books and games I’ve loved… that’s a pretty big question and a really long answer. :’)
RAARE is a comic about everything that did and didn’t happen in high school.
The usual: Hanging out, loitering, standing on the sidelines laughing at everything, stupid in-jokes, being on a non-varsity sports team, openly falling asleep in math class, and generally going through life with only the faintest notion that you might someday be older than 18.
The unusual: Life in a colonial city that is a magnet for supernatural adventures including but not limited to: seance-ruining ghosts, giant mutated zoo animals, carnivorous apple trees, and non-euclidean vending machines.
There’s also roller derby girls, violent cheerleaders, sadistic fashion students, and battling yacht clubs just for good measure.
RAARE is great fun to write, draw, and develop, but has been on hiatus for over a year now. I would love to bring it back, but it needs a little push to get going. If the comic could generate its own small income, allowing me to treat it as a freelance job, it would alleviate some of the stress and time commitments that are holding me back.
Every bit of support helps, whether you donate $1, reblog this post, or introduce the comic to your friends! Thanks so much and I can’t wait to start updating again :’)
A little study I did in college for a sex ed illustration assignment. The specific topic was open so I picked birth control. I ended up deciding on a different idea, but I kept this sketch around because I think it’s pretty.
It would have been fun to color this with jewel tones and lots of sparkles. Maybe one day.
